Heart & Soul

Most people would call 1,000 rides on the same roller coaster a record.

For Dan Tanski, it feels more like a thank-you note.

Some folks come to Silver Dollar City for the rides. Others come for the music, the craftsmen or a loaf of that oh-so-gooey cinnamon bread. For Dan, it is all of that and something even simpler.

Peace.

The easygoing free spirit from Republic, Missouri, is a proud employee of the Walmart deli there. But whenever he walks through the gates of Silver Dollar City, he leaves the worries of everyday life at the door.

"It's my happy place. When I'm here, nothing else matters. It's truly all I need."

That might surprise anyone who knew him as a child.

Growing up, Dan was terrified of big rides. Towering tracks, steep drops and screaming riders were enough to make him keep both feet firmly planted on the ground. While other kids raced toward roller coasters, Dan was content watching from a safe distance.

Then, during the Christmas season of 2019, something changed.

Dan climbed aboard Thunderation for the first time.

"It was dark, so I didn't know what to expect," he says. "It was scary not knowing where the drops were."

But somewhere in that darkness, winding through the Ozark hills, something clicked.

The boy who had spent years avoiding roller coasters found himself wanting to ride again.

And again.

And again.

What began as a leap of faith quickly became a turning point.

"Thunderation led me to try the bigger ones like Outlaw Run and Time Traveler," Dan says. "I started with Thunderation and built my way up. Now I ride them all."

As his confidence grew, so did his love for Silver Dollar City.

He became a regular visitor, embracing favorite attractions throughout the park, including Fire In The Hole. During the beloved ride's final season, Dan rode it hundreds of times, soaking up every turn, every laugh and every memory before it retired. He was even among the attraction's final ceremonial riders as the train pulled into the station one last time.

What started with one nervous ride on Thunderation had grown into something much bigger.

Silver Dollar City wasn't simply a place he visited anymore.

It had become his happy place.

Dan has logged thousands of miles through the Ozark hills on Thunderation. This season alone, he has already recorded more than 1,000 rides, carefully tracking each one in the notes app on his phone.

That's countless moments spent doing something that makes him smile.

The familiar climb up the lift hill.

The rush through the tunnel.

The wind in his long curly hair.

The comfort of knowing he is exactly where he wants to be.

These days, Dan comes to Silver Dollar City at least once or twice a week.

"Anytime I'm off work, I come here," he says. "Sometimes I even drive down after work."

He has his favorite stops, too. A steak grilled cheese from Travelers Stop is a must, and in the winter, he always adds tomato bisque soup to go with it.

But more than the rides or the food, it is the people who keep bringing him back.

"The ride operators here have become my friends," Dan says. "I love seeing them, and it seems like one big Thunderation family."

That may be the real story behind those 1,000 rides.

Not a record.

Not a number.

Not even a roller coaster.

But a place where he belongs.

Today, when the Thunderation train pulls out of the station and disappears into the Ozark hills, there's a good chance Dan is somewhere aboard, smiling as the worries of the world fall farther and farther behind him.

Not because he's chasing thrills.

Because he found something even better.

Friendship.

Comfort.

A place that feels like home.

"Whenever I'm stressed out, this takes my mind off everything else," Dan says. "No matter what is going on, I've got my friends here."
