The Hidden Heart of Silver Dollar City

It all started with a hole in the ground—a hole that became the heart and soul of Silver Dollar City. Hidden beneath your feet at America’s Best Theme Park is one of nature’s greatest wonders, Marvel Cave, a secret treasure that has quietly shaped the history of the Ozarks and the entire park itself. It’s Silver Dollar City’s deepest, darkest secret, waiting for you to explore.

A Love Story Begins in the Ozarks

Back in 1950, Hugo and Mary Herschend, a couple from Chicago with a love for nature and adventure, ventured to the Ozarks on a family vacation. What they discovered would change their lives forever: Marvel Cave, one of Missouri’s largest and most breathtaking caves. Captivated by its beauty, they packed up and moved south, leasing the cave from the Lynch family, who had been leading tours there since 1894.

Marvel at the Cathedral Room

Upon entering Marvel Cave, the Herschends were awestruck by the natural marvels before them. The centerpiece of the cave, the Cathedral Room, is one of the largest underground rooms in the United States—so massive that the Statue of Liberty could comfortably stand inside it with room to spare. Each visit to this living cave reveals new, hidden wonders and rich history, making it a unique adventure every time.

Transforming Marvel Cave for Guests

The Herschends were determined to enhance the visitor experience, and they did just that. They added concrete paths, stairs, and lights, and eventually installed a cable train to carry riders out of the cave, making it more accessible and boosting its popularity. As more sightseers flocked to Marvel Cave, the Herschends decided to offer even more—recreating the nearby mining village of Marmaros with potters, furniture makers, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen. This 1960 addition laid the foundation for the beloved Silver Dollar City we enjoy today.

America’s Longest-Running Cave Tour

Marvel Cave holds the record for the longest-running continuous cave tour in the United States. It invites you and your family to explore its spectacular underground world and discover its rich history—from early discoveries to its pivotal role in the creation of Silver Dollar City. With a comfortable 60-degree temperature year-round, Marvel Cave is the perfect adventure for any season.
